Jude's Craft Talk
Jude Sanner Long uses her maiden name to honor her family. She was born in Mattoon, IL, where two railroads intersect, one of which is the City of New Orleans. Arlo Guthrie sang about that train. Jude grew up in a wonderful family, and her dad was a polio survivor.  She graduated from Eastern Illinois University with a major in library science and a teaching degree. She taught grades 1, 3 5 and 6.

Then the coasts began to call and she moved to Biloxi, MS, on the Gulf Coast in the 1970s, right after Hurricane Camille. Then she moved to our Central Coast in the mid-70s and has never looked back. She's proud to say she never lived in Southern California.

In 1975 Jude accepted a clerical position with the SLO County Library Department and has steadily worked her way up. During the late-70s she attended Cal Poly and completed a two-year management program.  Jude is Morro Bay Library Branch Manager and Librarian and has worked in this community for 34 ½ years.  Library usage is up 22 percent over the last fiscal year. Even so, staff cuts and loss of open hours loom on the horizon.

Jude has been married to Gordon for 22 years, although they've been together for 32 years. He is self-employed, working as a landscaper in Los Osos and Baywood Park. They are happily child free but rich in nephews and nieces all over the world. They spend a lot of time with Gordon's very independent 91-year-old mom in Santa Maria.

Her nicknames are "The Iron Fist in the Velvet Glove" and "Old Eagle Eyes."  Jude's philosophy: "work is people first  - treasure relationships; tasks and deadlines are second."

Marge O'Neill encouraged Jude to join Rotary. Jude's favorite Rotary areas are dedication to community service and elimination of polio worldwide. Her father encouraged her to step up and belong to a service organization.

Jude's hobbies include gym and music, although every kind of music is more of a favorite than country. She has seen Pink Floyd six times. She is reading "Eat, Pray and Love" by Elizabeth Gilbert, and urges all of us to read it too.

Jude raises houseplants and love to cook. She went to see "Julie and Julia" and promptly went home to cook Hollandaise sauce and chocolate mousse cake.

Jude advocates for underutilized vegetables, such as cabbage, eggplant and cauliflower.  Her living room decorations include a pink pig hanging from the ceiling and our old friend, Walter the Dog, greeting all those who enter.  Jude believes in the five Rs: Recycle, Reuse, Repurpose, and Ruthlessly Ridding oneself of unusable stuff. She supports Achievement House and does not hold yard sales.

Jude is hopelessly, irreverently earnest. She prays for wisdom and good health and asks for challenges to overcome her weaknesses. She is a big fan of Rotarius and wants to take him on an upcoming fishing and hiking trip to Mammoth Lakes.
