CLUB BUSINESS & ANNOUNCEMENTS
Jim Q from Los Osos Rotary thanked those that helped with their fundraiser; it was fun AND successful.  They are co-sponsoring Jorge, our Rotary Exchange Student – things are going well on that front.

Trina Dougherty from Eco Rotary, along with our own Jude Long announced the upcoming Eco Rotary meeting (already held – sorry) entitled “Can I Recycle This?”  It promised to be fun and informative.  The meeting is being held at the MB Community Center from 530-7pm.

Bill P requested the Clubs financial support to help Cuesta College’s entry into “Welding Thunder”, a welding competition held in Arizona that Cuesta has won 4 out of the last 5 years.  It’s a wonderful program that won’t happen without some help.  Pres Carol moved the Club authorize $300 to help cover some of their costs; that motion was seconded by Jeff Jones and carried unanimously.  Bill will cut them a check.

Chuck let us in on his whereabouts the last couple of weeks; he’s been under the weather undergoing some tests to determine whether or not surgery would be needed; instead of the surgery they have prescribed him some nitrate meds to which he’s responding wonderfully to!!!  He thanks all of us for our support.  He went on to speak on behalf of the Foundation which, over time, has presented $128,250 in high school scholarships to 105 MBHS Students – we should all be very proud!!

Dan Costley reminded us of the “Learn How to be a Club President and other Board Positions” BBQ being held at Pete Zotovich’s this coming Monday, September 28th at  530pm.  Contact Dan and/or Pete if you are interested in attending.  ALSO, Dan will be sponsoring our next Evening with Heart Planning Meeting on Thursday, October 8th at his home @ 409 Rennell at 530pm. We need all the help we can get – hope you can attend.

Melissa Davis gave an update on Club Rush – it was held last Wednesday; they had 75+ students sign up for the Club; she feels they have a great group of kids who are excited to get involved.  She encouraged our attendance at their meetings which are held the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month from 1220-1pm.

Our District Governor, Jim Bell’s visit is fast approaching – Tuesday, October 6th we will be meeting on the Chablis for a bay cruise and Club meeting.  Cost is the usual lunch cost of $15 – it promises to be a great meeting.  A reminder to the Board Members – there will be a board meeting at 11am on the Chablis prior to heading out.

PROGRAM
Brent Christensen, from the Arroyo Grande Rotary Club was our speaker for the day.  Brent owns Christensen’s Business Advisory in SLO, a local consulting firm; he spoke on Collaborating Across Generations.  In every organization there are 4 common characteristics, Vision, Executable Plans, Employee Engagement and Leadership; today’s focus was on the Employee Engagement piece.  He educated us on Baby Boomers, those born 1946-1964 (most of us in the room); we value hard work, like competition, teamwork, success and whether we know it or not, use a lot of body language.  We also show appreciation, encourage knowledge and sharing and unfortunately are less open to change.  The Gen X’ers, those born 1965-1981 value entrepreneurship, creativity, information and feedback, they are the results of the latchkey era where both parents worked.  The Gen Y’ers, born 1982-2005 value autonomy, diversity, positive reinforcement, structure and technology.  Why is this important??  They are working in your organization and their definition of the world is different than yours – you need to understand them and how they think so that your organization can function as effectively and successfully as possible.  We can complain about “the why this or why that” or we can take advantage of the differences and make them work for us.

CLOSING
We continued with the new process for the 50/50 pot which now sits at $45; Sid’s daughter Eve’s number was picked – we frantically looked for the bag and chips which were never found – so Eve walked away $45 richer…  hopefully we will have found out bag of chips by next meeting!!!
