Debbie Spalding introduced Dr. Patricia Gordon, who earned her Ph.D. in education at USC. She was director of the CSUSB Career Center for eight years. She authored a weekly Career Connection article for several newspapers and taught graduate level courses at various universities. She has appeared on numerous television productions and on several occasions has been invited to provide topical expertise for television.

Dr. Gordon's talk was titled "Putting First Things First While Postponing Procrastination."  Her company is Creative Solutions. She made some good points with interesting one-liners:
  • Procrastination is the grave in which opportunity is buried.
  • Procrastination is moving out of our comfort zone.
  • Consider the pain of taking action versus the pain of avoidance.
  • Break down things you can't do anything about versus things you can do something about.
  • We have the same amount of time as Gandhi and Mother Theresa.
  • Know your own biological clock. Determine when you are most creative and have the most energy. Tackle difficult chores at those times.
  • No is a complete sentence, although sometimes you can say no, not now instead.
  • Take regular breaks to "sharpen your saw" and don't forget the chocolate.
  • Read "First Things First" by Stephen Covey.
