Stuart McElhinney introduced three of the four high school students who attended the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards in Ojai by both our club and the Los Osos club. The four students were Marissa Hay of Mission Prep High School, Rebecca Radke and Dan Moskowitz of Morro Bay High and Laura Clark, also of MBHS who couldn't be here due to her competing in CIF for swimming. Laura is pictured here who was able to attend the program in Los Osos (absent Rebecca Radke from photo).

Dan was first to talk and said that two months ago, he never would have seen himself attending such a program. He said when he first got in the car, there was reluctance driving at 7 a.m. with students he did not know. But on the trip back, there was nothing but smiles at the experience. Marissa then talked of the experience and said she really enjoyed meeting other people and enjoyed the guest speakers. She talked about how she was taken out of her comfort zone in a good way. She also mentioned how they learned to work together, particularly the girls, since 15 of them shared one shower, one mirror, and two sinks! Rebecca talked about how she was surrounded by such good people, and how she enjoyed so much meeting others. Dan also talked about Laura Clark, whom he has known since he was little. He said that Laura is a little on the shy side, but by the end of the program, she was actually on the dance floor enjoying herself.. When asked what each got the most out of, Marissa talked about goal setting and writing your goals down which forces her to work harder toward achieving them. Rebecca said the team exercises helped her to learn how to work with others. Dan also mentioned that they did a lot of worthwhile team building exercises. He also said that this experience helped him to be more comfortable with himself. Principal Dan Andrus ended the program by thanking both clubs for contributing to such a worthwhile excursion. President John thanked them for coming and presented each, including Principle Dan Andrus, with the special Rotary Service Above Self bronze coin.
