PROGRAM – District Governor Jim Bell and his wife Donna
John Weiss introduced our speaker, good friend and District Governor Jim Bell and his wife Donna.  Jim’s talk focused on Membership and he called it - Chiefs, Indians and Rhinos.  He said he was talking particularly to newer members of Rotary.  He said that very likely Rotary Clubs are full of lots of Chiefs as “you’re all leaders”; but he wants to pitch that it’s okay to be an Indian.  And in fact, it’s also okay to be a Rhino (the member who, because of outside obligations, might not be as active a participant as they’d like to be) – as long as you stick with the Club – he feels there is a magic with sticking with it for the long haul; it can and will nurture your soul.   Jim went on to add that when a member joins, they very likely are pitched “it gets you out of the office”, “it will get you out of your routine”, “you get to hear interesting presentations”, “you’ll build friendships”, and “you’ll have the opportunity to serve your community and others” – all admirable and worthy reasons to join.  What you don’t hear is that by joining, you’ll be a part of an economic powerhouse in the community – if you like doing business with people you enjoy – while not intentional, it’s really helpful.  Jim went on to speak on the global benefit of membership.  In 1985, there were 350,000 polio patients around the world; in 2015 there are less than 70.  How rewarding is that??!!!!!  Also, you become a HUGE part of what he calls “Acts of Kindness”.  Think about it – if each club does 10 projects per year and in each project, there are 10 Acts of Kindness…  that comes to 340,000 projects per year around the world and within those – kazillions Acts of Kindness – each and every year – all because of Rotary – all because of US!!!  To conclude – Membership provides richness and connection in your life that you can’t find anywhere else.  You need to ask yourself, what would your community look like if this Club didn’t exist – we are a decisive element.  He finished by thanking us for what we do; for our countless Acts of Kindness over the last 65 years… ENJOY ROTARY!!!
