PROGRAM
Larry Peterman of Hotlix was the program today.   Larry began by giving the history of his business, starting out in Pismo Beach by buying an existing beach front candy store.  The store originally used the leftover caramel syrup from their caramel apples to make suckers.  Larry got a Cal Poly Senior Project student to design some molds to add variety.  On his way to eat/drink at the Harbor Hut one evening, Larry decided to do a tequila favored sucker with a worm in the middle.  He reported that he waded through a significant amount of research and development as well as objections from groups like Mothers against Drunk Driving and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals as well as letters from extremists.  We got the feeling that Larry really felt like there was no such thing as bad publicity.  He also received some very positive exposure from a number of newscasts, Newsweek, local, regional, and international exposure.  He shared that he just met “head on” any issues and addressed them, which seemed to work well.

Larry also shared that he was careful not to overcommit his product as he witnesses several other companies/organizations that went out of business as a result.  He has never had to advertise, but does attend a number of trade shows.  This was a great and informative program that ended with treats including the sour cream and onion flavored crickets that I will be giving my husband as an early Christmas present.

CLOSING
We continued with the new process for the 50/50 pot is $300+, Jill (thank goodness it wasn’t Matt Franklin again) had the winning ticket and had a chance to draw the white poker chip and win the pot, or draw the black poker chip and have the pot continue to next week – unfortunately Jill was a loser and the pot was a winner.
